Before electricity reached every home, the gentle glow of a Tilly lamp or candle brought light to Irish evenings.

Tilly lamps, filled with paraffin oil, were used in kitchens, parlours and bedrooms. Candles stood ready for dark evenings, stormy nights and times of prayer.

Their light was simple, but it meant so much. It brought families together around the table, helped with evening work and reading, and offered comfort when the wind and rain were beating against the windows.

These were ordinary things, yet they became part of the memories of a generation — the warm glow of a lamp, the flicker of a candle and the feeling of being safely at home.
