Éamonn Ceannt was a patriot, Irish-language enthusiast, musician, teacher and revolutionary who became one of the leading figures of the 1916 Easter Rising.

Born Edward Thomas Kent on 21 September 1881 in Ballymoe, County Galway, he later settled in Dublin and became deeply involved in the Gaelic League, Irish cultural revival and the Irish Republican Brotherhood. He was a founding member of the Irish Volunteers and became an important organiser in the movement for Irish independence.

During Easter Week 1916, Ceannt commanded the 4th Battalion of the Irish Volunteers at the South Dublin Union, where some of the fiercest fighting took place. He was also one of the seven signatories of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic.

Following the Rising, Ceannt was court-martialled and executed by firing squad at Kilmainham Gaol on 8 May 1916, aged 34.
