Remembering the Ireland We Once Knew

Before tractors transformed farming, the horse was at the heart of work on the Irish farm.

Horses pulled the plough through the fields, turning the soil ready for planting. Harrows were then used to break up the earth and prepare a fine seedbed.

When the corn had grown tall and golden, harvest time brought another season of hard work. The crop was cut, gathered into sheaves and carefully stacked to dry before threshing.

Every stage depended on the strength of the horse and the skill of the farmer, with families and neighbours often working together to bring the harvest safely home.
