A Welcome in Every Home

The half door was once a familiar sight in Irish homes and cottages. More than just a doorway, it was part of everyday life — letting in the fresh air and light while giving neighbours a chance to stop for a chat and share the latest news.

It could keep the dog and hens out while still allowing the family to see what was happening outside. Children would often peek over the door, and neighbours, postmen, milkmen and local farmers might pause for a word.

And then there was the clever little trick used in some homes — a broom shaft attached across the top of the half door so that it could spin. If a hen tried to perch on it, the shaft would turn beneath its feet, sending the hen off again!

Simple, practical and ingenious, these little details tell us so much about everyday Irish life.
