Thomas MacDonagh was a poet, teacher, playwright and revolutionary who became one of the leading figures of the 1916 Easter Rising.

Born in Cloughjordan, County Tipperary, in 1878, MacDonagh had a deep love of Irish language, literature and culture. He joined the Gaelic League and became involved with the Irish Republican Brotherhood and the Irish Volunteers.

He was one of the seven signatories of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic and played an important role during the Easter Rising, commanding the Volunteers at Jacob's Biscuit Factory in Dublin.

Following the surrender, MacDonagh was court-martialled and executed by firing squad at Kilmainham Gaol on 3 May 1916, aged 38.
