Thomas J. Clarke was a lifelong Irish republican, writer and revolutionary who devoted much of his life to the cause of Irish independence.

Born in Dublin in 1858, Clarke became deeply involved in Irish republican activity and was a long-standing member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. His dedication and experience made him one of the key organisers of the 1916 Easter Rising.

Clarke was the first signatory of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. During the Rising, he served at the General Post Office in Dublin alongside the other leaders.

This RareGer card remembers his life, his beliefs and his contribution to the struggle for Irish independence. It also explores his interest in Irish language, history, culture and education, as well as his writings.

Following the surrender, Clarke was court-martialled and executed by firing squad on 3 May 1916, aged 58.
