Seán Mac Diarmada was a schoolteacher, organiser and Irish republican who became one of the leading figures of the 1916 Easter Rising.

Born in Kiltyclogher, County Leitrim, on 26 January 1883, he became involved with the Gaelic League and the Irish Republican Brotherhood and played an important role in the formation and organisation of the Irish Volunteers.

Mac Diarmada was one of the seven signatories of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic and was a member of the Military Council that planned the Rising.

During Easter Week 1916, he was based at the General Post Office in Dublin. Following the surrender, he was court-martialled and executed by firing squad at Kilmainham Gaol on 12 May 1916, aged 33.
