Traditionally described as a small supernatural being, the leprechaun belongs to Ireland’s rich tradition of fairy folklore and the Good People. In older stories, leprechauns were associated with skilled craftsmanship, particularly shoemaking, and were often portrayed as solitary, clever and mischievous characters.

Over time, stories of leprechauns became associated with hidden treasure, pots of gold and rainbows, although these colourful images developed and changed as Irish folklore travelled around the world.

The traditional Irish leprechaun is much more than a lucky charm. He is a character from a long storytelling tradition — sometimes helpful, sometimes troublesome, and always difficult to catch!
