For generations, the donkey was a faithful companion in rural Ireland. Small, sure-footed and hardworking, the donkey helped families with the everyday work of country life.

The donkey cart carried turf from the bog, hay from the fields, milk churns, potatoes, seaweed and goods to market — and brought provisions home again.

The traditional harness was carefully fitted, with every part having a purpose. The collar, breast strap, bridle and traces allowed the donkey to pull its load safely and steadily.

The donkey was more than a working animal. It was often part of the family, cared for with kindness and respect.
