Meet the Fear Dearg, meaning “Red Man” in Irish, one of the stranger and more mischievous figures in Irish fairy folklore.

The Fear Dearg is traditionally described as a small supernatural being dressed in red clothing, sometimes wearing a red cap and appearing with a distinctive, rough or grotesque appearance.

Unlike the more familiar leprechaun, the Fear Dearg is often portrayed as a solitary and troublesome character, fond of practical jokes, frightening encounters and meddling in the affairs of humans.

Irish folklore contains many different kinds of supernatural beings, and the Fear Dearg belongs to this wider world of the Good People and the Otherworld. Stories about him vary between regions and storytellers, as much of Ireland's folklore was passed down orally.
