Across the Irish countryside, perfect circles of grass and wildflowers have long captured the imagination. Known as fairy rings, these natural circles became woven into Ireland’s rich tradition of fairy folklore.

In old stories, fairy rings were believed to be places where the Good People, or Aos Sí, gathered to dance, celebrate and pass between the human world and the Otherworld.

People were often warned to treat these mysterious circles with respect. Stories told of strange music heard at night, unexpected encounters and the danger of disturbing a place belonging to the fairies.

In reality, many fairy rings are created naturally by fungi growing in circular patterns. Yet their place in Irish folklore has given them another meaning — turning an ordinary feature of the landscape into something magical.
