Across Ireland’s countryside lie ancient circular earthworks known as raths — places where archaeology and folklore meet.

A rath was generally an early medieval enclosed settlement or farmstead, often surrounded by an earthen bank and ditch. Many survive today as grassy circular mounds and enclosures scattered across the Irish landscape.

Over generations, some raths became closely associated in folklore with the Good People, or Aos Sí. Stories warned that these ancient places should be treated with care and respect, and that disturbing them could bring mysterious consequences.

For those who grew up with these traditions, the rath was more than an old mound in a field. It could be a place of mystery, memory and the Otherworld — a reminder that Ireland's landscape carried stories of its own.
