Across Ireland, circular earthworks, ringforts and other ancient sites became closely associated in popular tradition with the Good People, or Aos Sí. For generations, stories warned against disturbing these places, cutting down trees growing on them or interfering with the ancient landscape.

Many of these sites are much older than the folklore surrounding them. Some are archaeological remains of early medieval settlements, while others are ancient monuments whose original purposes belong to much earlier periods.

Yet in Irish storytelling, they became places of mystery — where the ordinary world and the Otherworld were believed to meet.
