The Cross of Cong is one of the finest surviving masterpieces of Irish metalwork. Commissioned around 1123 AD for the High King Toirdelbach Ua Conchobair, it was crafted by the renowned goldsmith Mael Ísu mac Bratáin for the monastery at Cong on the borders of Mayo and Galway.

Fashioned from oak and richly decorated with bronze, silver, gold, niello and precious crystal, the cross was designed to contain a revered relic believed to be a fragment of the True Cross. Today it stands as a remarkable symbol of Ireland's artistic brilliance, Christian devotion and medieval craftsmanship.
