In traditional Irish and wider European folklore, a changeling was believed to be a supernatural being secretly left in place of a human child, often by the Good People or Aos Sí.

Stories developed around the fear that a child might somehow have been taken into the Otherworld and replaced by another being. Similar traditions were also told about adults who became unexpectedly ill or behaved in ways that seemed unusual or unexplained.

These beliefs formed part of a much older tradition of trying to understand illness, difference, misfortune and the mysteries of life before modern medicine could provide explanations.

Today, the changeling belongs to Ireland's rich folklore tradition rather than established fact. Its stories offer an insight into how earlier communities understood the unknown and the mysterious relationship between the human world and the Otherworld.
