The name Bean-Tí can be understood as “woman of the house”, and in folklore she is sometimes described as a supernatural female presence connected with the home, household and family.

Unlike some of the darker figures of Irish folklore, the Bean-Tí can appear as a more comforting presence — a guardian of the household, associated with domestic life, care and the quiet mysteries of the home.

Stories of fairy women vary greatly between regions and storytellers, as much of Irish folklore was passed down through oral tradition. Some traditions describe supernatural women connected with particular families or houses, while others place them within the wider world of the Good People.
