On 9 November 1935, a small boat carrying people returning from Scotland struck rocks while crossing from Burtonport to Arranmore. Nineteen lives were lost, leaving only one survivor. Many of those aboard were seasonal tattie hokers—men and women who travelled to Scotland each year to earn a living for their families.
