Saving the Turf – From the Bog to the Hearth

For generations, Irish families relied on the bog for fuel to keep their homes warm through the long winter months. Cutting, drying, gathering and stacking turf was hard work, often shared by families and neighbours.

This RareGer card remembers the traditional craft of saving the turf — from cutting the sod with a slane, to drying it in the wind, bringing it home by cart and building the great peat stack.
