Observed around 31st October, Samhain marked the close of the harvest and the beginning of the dark half of the Celtic year. It was a time of gathering, remembrance and reflection, when communities lit sacred fires and prepared for the coming winter.
In Irish tradition, Samhain became associated with the belief that the boundary between the human world and the Otherworld grew thinner, allowing stories of the Aos Sí and ancestral spirits to flourish in folklore. These traditions later influenced many of the customs now associated with Halloween, while remaining an important part of Ireland’s cultural and mythological heritage.
