Across the Irish countryside stand ancient circular earthworks, ringforts and other landscape features that have become deeply connected with stories of the Good People and the Fae.

For generations, Irish folklore carried a simple warning:

Never disturb a fairy fort.

People were traditionally cautious about cutting down trees growing on these places, building across them or interfering with the ancient earthworks. Stories told of strange happenings, bad luck and mysterious consequences for those who disturbed a place believed to belong to the Good People.

Many of these sites have a real archaeological history. Ringforts, for example, were often early medieval settlements, while other ancient monuments belong to much earlier periods. The folklore surrounding them developed alongside the landscape and became part of Ireland's storytelling tradition.

The belief was not simply about fear. It reflected a deep respect for ancient places, the countryside and the unseen world.
