Lughnasa (Lúnasa), observed on 1st August, was one of the four great seasonal festivals of Celtic Ireland. Named after the legendary god Lugh, it marked the beginning of the harvest and became a joyful time of thanksgiving for the fruits of the land.

Across Ireland, communities gathered for harvest fairs, music, dancing, athletic games and hilltop celebrations. Bonfires were lit, families shared their first grain and berries, and people honoured the enduring bond between the land, the seasons and one another.

Today, Lughnasa remains an important part of Ireland’s cultural heritage, reminding us that gratitude, generosity and community have always been at the heart of Irish life.
