The Story of James Connolly

James Connolly was one of the most important figures in Ireland’s revolutionary history. Born in Edinburgh in 1868 to Irish parents, he became a passionate socialist, trade union organiser and advocate for workers’ rights.

After spending time in America, Connolly returned to Ireland and became deeply involved in the labour movement. He helped establish the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union and became a key figure in the Irish socialist and republican movements.

During the 1916 Easter Rising, Connolly commanded the Irish Citizen Army and was one of the leaders who proclaimed the Irish Republic.

Following the surrender, Connolly was court-martialled and executed by firing squad on 12 May 1916.
