Remembering the Ireland We Once Knew

For generations, the sea has been part of Irish life. From small coastal villages to busy fishing harbours, families depended on the waters around Ireland for food, work and a way of life.

The traditional currach carried fishermen along the rugged Atlantic coast, while larger boats ventured further out in search of the daily catch.

Herring, mackerel, cod, ling and whiting filled the nets, providing food for families and supporting the communities along the shore.

Fishing was hard and sometimes dangerous work. Men faced rough seas, sudden storms and long days away from home, yet they continued to provide for their families and communities.

This card remembers Ireland's maritime heritage — the boats, the fishermen, the harbours and the deep connection between the people and the sea.
