Harnessing the Horse – A Partnership Built on Trust

Remembering the Ireland We Once Knew

Before tractors became part of everyday farm life, the horse was an essential worker on farms throughout Ireland.

Each working day began with care and preparation. The horse was groomed, fed and carefully harnessed before being put to work.

Every part of the harness had its purpose — from the collar and hames to the traces, bridle and reins. The equipment had to be fitted correctly so that the horse could work safely and comfortably.

Horses pulled ploughs through the fields, drew carts and brought home hay, turf and other loads. They worked alongside the farmer through every season.

A good working horse was valued and cared for, and a strong partnership developed between horse and farmer.

This beautifully illustrated RareGer card remembers the skill of harnessing, the strength of the working horse and the traditional farming life of Ireland.

Before the tractor, there was the horse — faithful, strong and always ready for the day's work.
