Before tractors became part of everyday farm life, the horse was an essential worker on farms across Ireland. Each morning, the horse had to be carefully groomed and harnessed before the day's work began.

From ploughing the fields and bringing home the turf to carrying hay and drawing the farm cart, horses worked alongside the farmer through every season.

The harness itself was a skilled piece of equipment, with every part having its purpose — the collar, hames, traces, bridle, saddle pad, chains and pins.
