Celebrated around 1st May, Beltane was one of the four great seasonal festivals of Celtic Ireland. It marked the arrival of summer, when the land burst into life and communities gathered to celebrate fertility, abundance and the growing strength of the sun.

The lighting of hilltop bonfires was the heart of the festival. People and livestock were traditionally blessed by passing near the sacred flames, symbolising protection, purification and hope for the season ahead. Music, dancing and joyful gatherings honoured the deep connection between the people, the land and the turning wheel of the year.
