Born under a prophecy of sorrow, Deirdre was said to grow into a woman of extraordinary beauty. She fell deeply in love with Naoise, a young warrior of Ulster, and together they fled Ireland with his brothers rather than allow their love to be separated.

They travelled to Scotland and lived there for a time, but eventually they were persuaded to return to Ireland.

Their return brought them into the power of King Conchobar of Ulster, who had wanted Deirdre for himself.

Tragedy followed. Naoise and his brothers were killed, and Deirdre was taken back to Ulster.

The old stories tell of her profound grief and the terrible fate that followed.

Deirdre's story has survived for centuries as one of Ireland's great tales of love, loyalty, betrayal and sorrow.
